About this course
MChem (Hons) in Chemistry with Computing, a chemistry and computer science degree bridging chemical theory and computational methods. Core topics include Programming, Laboratory Techniques, Research Methods, and Communication & Writing. This programme includes an optional placement year route alongside the standard four-year full-time structure. The first year covers core principles through Laboratory and Computer Skills 1, Fundamentals of Physical Chemistry, Fundamental Synthetic Chemistry, Spectroscopy and Analysis 1, Energetics and Equilibria 1, and Structure and Reactivity 1. The second year continues with Laboratory and Computer Skills 2, Structural Characterisation, Spectroscopy and Analysis, Thermodynamics, Kinetics and Quanta, Structure and Reactivity 2, Computer Programming, and Computing Skills. The third year builds expertise via Investigative Computational Projects, Data, Algorithms and Numerical Optimisation, Modern Aspects of Organic Chemistry, Science Communication, Current Trends in Inorganic Chemistry, and Energy, Molecules and Applications. The fourth year features advanced modules such as Research Project, Mass Spectrometry and Associated Techniques, and Molecular Simulation and Bioinformatics, while optional modules allow students to specialise in topics including Digital and Sustainable Chemistry, Contemporary Organic Synthesis, Biomedical Analytical Technologies, Contemporary Inorganic Chemistry, and Drugs: Mode of Action, Properties and Synthesis.
