About this course

BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering, a civil engineering degree focused on technical design and infrastructure development. Core topics include Statistics, Mathematical Modelling, Research Methods, Project Management, Engineering Design, and Ethics & Professional Practice. The course includes an optional placement year and offers an available route to transfer to the MEng program by the end of the second year. The first year establishes fundamental concepts through Professional Skills, Structural Forms and Stress Analysis, Mathematical Modelling of Structures, Mechanical and Mathematical Principles of Fluid Mechanics, Engineering Materials for Construction, Collaborative Practice in the Built Environment, and Geomatics Engineering Surveying 1. The second year advances technical knowledge via Open Channel Flow Design and Analysis, Soil Mechanics and Geology, Management of Design and Construction, Practical Skills for Civil Engineering, Analysis & Design of Steel and Timber Structures, Design of Concrete and Masonry Structures, and Geomatics Engineering Surveying 2. The third year involves a Research Dissertation alongside compulsory modules such as Further Structural Analysis and Geotechnical Design, Construction Contracts, Law and Finance, Teamwork and Leadership, Sustainable Development and Stakeholder Communication, and Transport Infrastructure Engineering. Students can further tailor their studies through optional modules including Digital Design, Construction and Operation, Ground Engineering and Monitoring, Water Resources, Sustainability and Climate Change, and the University Wide Language Programme.
