About this course
MEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering, a civil engineering degree focused on the planning, design, construction and maintenance of infrastructure systems. Core topics include Statistics, Mathematical Modelling, Research Methods, Project Management, Engineering Design, and Ethics & Professional Practice. The fourth year features advanced study in civil engineering analysis, design and management, alongside industry-focused projects and specialist optional modules. The course fully meets the educational requirements for becoming a Chartered Engineer. Year 1 introduces foundational concepts through Professional Skills, Structural Forms and Stress Analysis, Mathematical Modelling of Structures, Mechanical and Mathematical Principles of Fluid Mechanics, Engineering Materials for Construction, Collaborative Practice in the Built Environment, and Geomatics Engineering Surveying 1. Year 2 develops technical capabilities via Open Channel Flow Design and Analysis, Soil Mechanics and Geology, Management of Design and Construction, Practical Skills for Civil Engineering, Analysis & Design of Steel and Timber Structures, Design of Concrete and Masonry Structures, and Geomatics Engineering Surveying 2. Year 3 advances proficiency through Research Dissertation, Further Structural Analysis and Geotechnical Design, Construction Contracts, Law and Finance, Teamwork and Leadership, Sustainable Development and Stakeholder Communication, and Transport Infrastructure Engineering, while offering optional modules such as Digital Design, Construction and Operation, Ground Engineering and Monitoring, and Water Resources, Sustainability and Climate Change. Year 4 consolidates advanced learning with Teamwork Design Project, Low Carbon Materials for Construction, Advanced Geotechnical and Environmental Modelling, and Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, supported by further options including Infrastructure Planning, Principles and Application of BIM, Urban and Rural Water Engineering, Strategic Management for Construction and Engineering, Geographic Information Systems and Data Management, Disaster Risk Management, and Flood Modelling and Management.
