About this course
BSc (Hons) in Criminology, a sociology degree exploring crime, deviance, the criminal justice system, and the societal responses to offending behaviour. Core topics include Data Analysis, Statistics, Research Methods, and Policy Analysis. The curriculum is available as a three-year full-time route or a four-year option incorporating a professional placement year. The first year establishes fundamental concepts through compulsory modules such as Social Research, Sociological Imagination in the Contemporary World, Introduction Criminology, An Introduction to the Criminal Justice System, and Crime, Media and Moral Panic, alongside various optional choices. The second year progresses into specialized areas with compulsory study in Advanced Research Methods A, Criminological Theory, Crime Prevention, Doing Quantitative Research, Intoxication and Society, and Understanding Punishment, paired with additional optional modules. The final year centers on independent research through the Criminology Dissertation, supported by compulsory modules in Youth Justice and Rehabilitation and Recovery, alongside further optional modules spanning forensic psychology, gender, and social policy.
