Entry requirements
A level: ABB including one of the following subjects: English (Literature, Language, or both), any Language subject, Geography, History, Classical Civilisation, Law, Philosophy, Politics, Psychology, Religious Studies or Sociology. IB: 32 (6,5,5 HL) to include one of the following subjects at HL: English (Literature, Language or both), any Language subject, Geography, History, Philosophy, Global Politics, Psychology, World Religions, Social and Cultural Anthropology. BTEC: BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma: DDM plus an A level grade B in a required subject. BTEC Level 3 National Diploma: DD plus one A level in a required subject at Grade B. BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate: D plus two A levels at Grades BB including one required subject. Preferred BTEC: Performing Arts, Art & Design, Digital Film and Video Production, Business IT, Applied Science, Sport, Sport and Exercise Science, Health & Social Care.
About this course
BA (Hons) in English and Creative Writing, an English degree centred on literary studies alongside the practice and technique of writing. Core topics include Research Methods, Critical & Analytical Thinking, Global & Comparative Perspective. The course is available as a three-year full-time programme or a four-year option incorporating a professional placement year. The first year covers foundational skills through compulsory modules such as Introduction to Drama, Narrative Forms, Elephants and Engines: An Introduction to Creative Writing, Analysing Poetry: Metre, Form and Meaning, and Theory Matters, while offering optional choices including Writing in History. The second year progresses with compulsory practical study in Maps and Motors alongside diverse optional modules spanning literature, film, and culture. The final year centres on independent research and professional preparation through the compulsory English Dissertation and Driving On: Writing Towards Publication.
