Entry requirements
A level: ABB including one of the following subjects: English (Literature, Language, or both), any Language subject, Geography, History, Classical Civilisation, Law, Philosophy, Politics, Psychology, Religious Studies or Sociology. IB: 32 (6,5,5 HL) to include one of the following subjects at HL: English (Literature, Language or both), any Language subject, Geography, History, Philosophy, Global Politics, Psychology, World Religions, Social and Cultural Anthropology. BTEC: BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma: DDM plus an A level grade B in a required subject. BTEC Level 3 National Diploma: DD plus one A level in a required subject at Grade B. BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate: D plus two A levels at Grades BB including one required subject. Preferred BTEC: Performing Arts, Art & Design, Digital Film and Video Production, Business IT, Applied Science, Sport, Sport and Exercise Science, Health & Social Care.
About this course
BA (Hons) in English Literature, an English Literature degree centred on the study of texts from the Renaissance period to the twenty-first century. Core topics include Research Methods, Critical & Analytical Thinking, Global & Comparative Perspective. The course offers a structured progression of literary-historical study alongside extensive module choice in the later stages. The first year covers core foundations through compulsory modules such as Writing in History, Introduction to Drama, Narrative Forms, Analysing Poetry: Metre, Form and Meaning, and Theory Matters, while introducing optional subjects like Gaming Cultures and Introduction to Film. The second year provides further choice through specialised options including Victorian Literature, Love and Life in Stuart-Era Literature (1603-1714), Modernisms, and Weird Fiction. The final year focuses on advanced study and independent research, featuring compulsory modules like English Dissertation and Adapting Shakespeare, alongside optional modules such as Global America and Maladies and Medicines.
