About this course

BSc (Hons) in Financial Mathematics, a mathematics degree centred on analytical and statistical approaches to financial theory and economics. Core topics include Programming, Statistics, Mathematical Modelling, Financial Analysis, and Policy Analysis. The course is available as a three-year full-time programme or a four-year option incorporating a professional placement year, with no prior economics or finance knowledge required at entry. The first year establishes core foundations through Principles of Macroeconomics, Principles of Microeconomics, Analysis I, Calculus I, Linear Algebra and Geometry I, Introductory Probability and Statistics, and Linear Algebra and Geometry II. The second year progresses with Intermediate Macroeconomics, Intermediate Microeconomics, Introduction to Financial Economics, Analysis II, Calculus II, Probability Theory, Mechanics, Complex Analysis, and ODEs and Calculus of Variations. The final year involves advanced compulsory study in Financial Economics and Asset Pricing, Stochastic Methods in Finance, Corporate Finance and Derivatives, Linear Differential Equations, and Computational Methods in Finance. Students may also tailor their studies by selecting from optional modules such as Algebra, Economics of the Financial System, Graph Theory, Applied Statistics, Introduction to Differential Geometry, Dynamical Systems, Asymptotic Methods, Operational Research, Developments in Macroeconomics, Developments in Microeconomics, Analytical Dynamics, Statistical Modelling, Elements of Topology, Medical Statistics, Studies in Science and Mathematics Education, Advanced Complex Analysis, Vibrations and Waves, Game Theory, Mathematical Biology, Industrial Economics, Central Banking and Financial Crises, and the University-wide Language Programme.
