About this course
BA (Hons) in Geography, a geography degree spanning social and natural sciences to examine landscapes, peoples, places and environments. Core topics include Data Analysis, Laboratory Techniques, Research Methods, Fieldwork. The course provides a broad foundation in human and physical geography during the first year, after which students can increasingly specialise in human geography or maintain a balanced focus across human and physical geography. The first year covers core themes through Academic and Professional Skills for Geography, Unequal Worlds, Earth Systems, Spatial Data Analysis, Practising Geography, Geography in Action, Environmental Monitoring, Researching Society, and a University-wide Language Programme. The second year progresses with Physical Geography Research: Design and Practice, Human Geography Research: Design and Practice, Remote Sensing & GIS, Globalization, Social Difference, Earth Surface Processes and Landforms, and Environmental Systems and Resource Management. Optional modules in the second year include Global Migration, Understanding our Environmental Footprint, Physical Geography Fieldcourse, Your Future Career: Preparing for the World of Work, Urban Geographies, Cultural Spaces and Digital Landscapes, River Science, Human Geography Fieldcourse, and the University-wide Language Programme. The final year centres on the Geography Dissertation module, complemented by optional choices such as Glacial Environments and Landscapes, Climate Change: Cooperating with the Future, Aeolian Processes and Landforms, Globalised Urbanisation, Geographies of Children and Youth, Geographies of Home and Work, Landscapes in Transition: Glacial Extinction in the Swiss Alps Fieldcourse, Urban Political Geographies Fieldcourse, Rural Futures, Landscape Evolution and GIS, Conservation: Principles and Practice, Environmental Change in the Anthropocene, Mobilities, transnationalism and diaspora, Geographies of Education Virtual Fieldcourse, and the University-wide Language Programme.
