About this course
BSc (Hons) in Mathematics with Economics, a mathematics and economics degree centred on mathematical and computational approaches to economic theory and quantitative analysis. Core topics include Programming, Statistics, Mathematical Modelling, Financial Analysis, Policy Analysis, and Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. No prior knowledge of economics is required, as the initial two years provide foundational training in macroeconomic and microeconomic theory and policy. The first year builds foundations through compulsory modules such as Principles of Macroeconomics, Principles of Microeconomics, Calculus I, Analysis I, Linear Algebra and Geometry I, Introductory Probability and Statistics, and Linear Algebra and Geometry II. The second year continues with compulsory study in Calculus II, Probability Theory, Mechanics, and ODEs and Calculus of Variations, alongside optional modules covering topics such as Intermediate Macroeconomics, Intermediate Microeconomics, Introduction to Econometrics, Introduction to Financial Economics, Computing and Numerical Methods, Algebra, Mathematical Thinking, Graph Theory, Analysis II, Applied Statistics, Introduction to Differential Geometry, Complex Analysis, Statistical Modelling, and Elements of Topology. In later stages, students tailor their studies through numerous options spanning International Economic Relations, Economics of the Financial System, Applied Econometrics, Statistical Machine Learning, Advanced Numerical Methods, Introduction to Algebraic Geometry, Number Theory, Dynamical Systems, Asymptotic Methods, Operational Research, Stochastic Methods in Finance, Functional Analysis, Bayesian Statistics and Markov Chain Monte Carlo Methods, Developments in Microeconomics, Financial Economics and Asset Pricing, Developments in Macroeconomics, Galois Theory, Computational Methods for Differential Equations, Medical Statistics, Studies in Science and Mathematics Education, Advanced Complex Analysis, Representation Theory, Linear Differential Equations, Vibrations and Waves, Elliptic Curves, Game Theory, Computational Methods in Finance, Mathematical Biology, Industrial Economics, Central Banking and Financial Crises, Corporate Finance and Derivatives, and University-wide Language Programme.
