About this course
BSc (Hons) in Sociology, a sociology degree centred on the study of contemporary societies, social institutions, and cultural change. Core topics include Data Analysis, Statistics, Research Methods, Policy Analysis, Critical & Analytical Thinking, and Social & Cultural Analysis. Students can choose between a three-year full-time route or a four-year full-time path incorporating a placement year. The first year establishes foundations through compulsory modules such as Social Research, Identities, Inequalities & Resistance, Sociological Imagination in the Contemporary World, Sociology, Culture and Public Life, and World Inequalities and Polarisation, alongside optional choices like Gaming Cultures and Politics and Government. The second year advances learning with compulsory modules including Advanced Research Methods A, Social Theories, Doing Quantitative Research, Globalisation, Postcolonialism and Migration, and Digital Lives and Society, with options such as Political Psychology and Urban Geographies. The final year focuses on independent research through the compulsory Sociology Project Dissertation, supported by further compulsory modules like Gender, Intersectionality and Society, Sociological Futures, and Consumption, Culture and Everyday Life, alongside optional modules including Forensic Psychology, Youth Justice, and Poverty, Pay and Living Standards.
