About this course
BA in Classics and English, an English and Classics degree centred on the literature and culture of the ancient and modern world. Candidates with an A-level in Latin or Greek take a three-year course, while those taking Beginners’ Latin or Greek complete a four-year course that includes a preliminary year. A final-year dissertation permits independent research supervised by an expert. The first year covers Introduction to English language and literature, Literature in English 1550–1660, Unseen translation for Classics, and Greek and/or Latin literature (two papers). Students select options across English literature, ancient literature, history, philosophy, and linguistics, alongside comparative link papers such as Epic, and either Comedy, Tragedy, or Reception.
