About this course
BA in Modern Languages and Linguistics, an English Language and Linguistics and Modern Languages degree centred on the study of a modern language combined with linguistic theory. Students spend a compulsory year abroad during the course, typically taking place in the third year through university exchanges, language assistantships or work placements. The first year covers general linguistics, phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics, alongside practical language work and literature studies. The third year builds on this with practical language work, the history of the language, structure and use of that language in its modern form, and a period of literature. Optional modules span areas such as film studies, advanced translation, women’s writing, visual cultures, race and representation, and new ecologies, alongside specialist options including a linguistic project.
