About this course

MChem in Chemistry MChem, a chemistry degree centred on fundamental molecular science, laboratory investigation and professional chemical practice. Core topics include Programming, Data Analysis, Statistics, Laboratory Techniques, Research Methods, Critical & Analytical Thinking, Entrepreneurship. The course includes a final-year research project conducted alongside academic research experts, and holds professional accreditation. Following foundational introductory modules in the first year, students study compulsory subjects such as Fundamentals of Chemistry 1, Fundamentals of Chemistry 2, Essential Skills for Chemists, and The chemical world around us: from biological chemistry to sustainability. The second year introduces intermediate laboratory work and theoretical concepts through modules including Chemistry Lab and Skills, Chemical Structure and Reactivity, Measurement and Modelling of Chemical Systems, and Further Core Chemistry, alongside optional choices like Biological Chemistry and Introduction to Sustainable Chemistry. The third year advances into specialised topics via compulsory modules such as Mathematical and Physical Sciences Projects and Professional Skills, Advanced Organic Chemistry, Advanced Physical Chemistry, and Advanced Inorganic Chemistry, supplemented by options including Sustainable Energy Technologies and Systems, Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology, and Digital Chemistry. The final year centres on the compulsory Research Project module alongside a broad selection of advanced optional modules spanning materials chemistry, asymmetric synthesis, theoretical chemistry, sustainable technologies, industrial catalysis, pharmacology and drug design, science communication, and enterprise.
