About this course
BA in English and Modern Languages & Cultures BA, an English and Modern Languages degree centred on the relationship between language, literature, and culture across Europe and beyond. Core topics include Research Methods, Communication & Writing, Critical & Analytical Thinking, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, and Design & Creative Practice. Students spend the third year either studying or working abroad to immerse themselves in a foreign language and culture. The first year introduces foundational literary study alongside intensive or advanced modern language training in subjects such as French, German, Spanish, Russian, Dutch, Czech, Catalan, or Portuguese, paired with historical and cultural modules. Optional choices in the first year let students explore subjects such as Contemporary Literature, Hybrid Forms: Reading Genre, and The Creative Writing Lab. The second year builds on these language and literary foundations through compulsory modules like Arts of Persuasion and Romantics, Victorians and Moderns (a), alongside options including Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Hollywood Cinema. Following the compulsory year abroad, the final year features Project Module 1, advanced language proficiency study, and optional modules such as The Invention of Romanticism and Renaissance Literature, Modern Crisis.
