About this course

BA in Linguistics and Modern Languages & Cultures, an English Language and Linguistics and Modern Languages degree exploring the structural intricacies of human speech alongside international cultural traditions. Core topics include Research Methods, Fieldwork, Historical Research, Critical & Analytical Thinking, and Global & Comparative Perspective. Students spend the third year abroad studying or working in a country connected to their chosen language. The first year introduces foundational subjects through compulsory modules such as Sounds and Structures of English, Style in Language, French Advanced, and Understanding Modern French and Francophone Cultures. The second year expands linguistic expertise with compulsory study including Phonetics, First Language Acquisition, Arts of Persuasion, and French Higher Advanced. In the third year, all students complete a year abroad placement to immerse themselves in another linguistic and cultural environment.
