About this course
BA in Modern Languages and Cultures, a modern languages degree centred on multilingual proficiency, cultural studies and international societies. Core topics include Research Methods, Critical & Analytical Thinking, Global & Comparative Perspective. Students complete a compulsory year abroad during the third year to study or work overseas, and undertake an independent research project in the final year. The first year establishes fundamental linguistic competence alongside cultural foundations through modules such as French Beginner Intensive, German Beginner Intensive, Understanding Modern French and Francophone Cultures, and Understanding German and Dutch Histories and Cultures, with optional choices like Euro-Visions: Imagining and Questioning Europe. The second year builds advanced communicative skills and explores literary contexts through compulsory options including Arts of Persuasion, Why Read? Literature in the World, French Higher Advanced, and German Higher Advanced, alongside topical modules like Translation. The third year is spent abroad immersed in the target language and culture across designated options such as French Year Abroad, Germanic Studies Year Abroad, Hispanic Studies Year Abroad, Russian and Slavonic Studies Year Abroad, or Luxembourg Studies Year Abroad. The final year focuses on near-native fluency and specialised themes through compulsory proficient language units alongside options covering areas such as Social Approaches to Multilingualism, Comparative Critique of Consumer Culture, and Migration and its Representations Across Cultures, culminating in the Project in Languages and Cultures.
