About this course
Master of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering, a biomedical engineering and electrical and electronic engineering degree focused on engineering solutions for healthcare applications. Core topics include Programming, Systems Design, Circuit Design, Computer Architecture, Embedded Systems, Signal Processing, Microelectronics, Control Systems, Data Analysis, Statistics, Mathematical Modelling, Research Methods, Engineering Design, and Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. Students complete both an individual project and a group design project, and have the option to undertake a one-year placement in industry. The first year builds foundational knowledge through Applied Biomechanical Mathematics, Biomedical Engineering Mathematics, Digital Systems, From Molecules to Life, Introduction to Biomedical Engineering, Programming I (BIOM), Programming II (BIOM), Sensor Interfaces, and the BIOM Part One Laboratory Programme. Year two introduces more advanced concepts with Algorithms and data, Artificial Intelligence, Biomechatronics, Biomedical Engineering Design, Control and Systems Engineering, Digital Health Principles, Fundamentals of Cell Biology and Biomaterials, Semiconductor Devices and Sensors, Signal Processing, and Statistical Modelling I. The third year involves compulsory study in Advanced Databases, Biosensors and Diagnostics, Machine Learning Technologies, Robot Kinematics and Dynamics, and a two-phase Individual Project, alongside optional modules covering topics such as Advanced Computer Architecture, Advanced Partial Differential Equations, Analogue and Mixed Signal Electronics, Bioinformatics and Systems Biology, Biomaterials, Cloud Application Development, Computational Biology, Computer Vision, Control System Design, Digital IC and Systems Design, Embedded Networked Systems, Engineering Replacement Body Parts, Fluids and Mechanical Materials, From Data to Dynamical Model: System Identification, Global Health, Imaging for Digital Health and Bioscience, Interaction Science, Manufacturing and Materials, Mechanical Power Transmission and Vibration, Natural Language Processing, Operational Research, Orthopaedic Biomechanics, Precision Health: Machine Learning Under Uncertainty, Principles of Neuroscience, Real-Time Computing and Embedded Systems, Security of Cyber Physical Systems, and Signal and Image Processing. The final year comprises compulsory modules in Data Mining, Deep Learning Technologies, Group Design Project, Industrial Studies, and Interdisciplinary Thinking, supplemented by options such as Advanced Micro and Nanosystems, Applied Control Systems, Biological Materials and Biomedical Devices, Biometrics, Data Economy, Data Visualisation, Foundations of Data Science, Intelligent Mobile Robotics, Introduction to Quantum Computing, Knowledge Graphs for AI Systems, Microfabrication, Microfluidics and Lab-on-a-Chip, Microsensor Technologies, Mobile Applications Development, Numerical Methods, Optimisation for Machine Learning, Research Topics on Interaction Science, Secure Hardware and Embedded Devices, and Simulation Modelling for Computer Science.
