About this course
Integrated Masters degree in Science in Environmental Geoscience, an earth and environmental sciences degree focused on planetary systems and sustainable environmental management. Core topics include Data Analysis, Research Methods, Fieldwork, Communication & Writing, and Critical & Analytical Thinking. The four-year programme includes an advanced independent research project in the final year and incorporates residential field courses. The first year establishes core foundations through modules such as Dynamic Earth, Earth Materials, Earth and Ocean System, Fieldwork for Geoscientists, How to be Scientifically Literate, Introduction to Environmental Biogeochemistry, and Physics of the Ocean. The second year builds competency with Exploration Geophysics and Remote Sensing, Geochemistry of the Ocean and Earth System, Geohazards, Global Climate Change: Science, Impacts and Policy, Global Sustainability Challenges, Key Skills and Fieldwork for Geologists, Monitoring Coastal and Estuarine Environments, Ocean Data Analysis and Modelling, Sediment in the Environment, Structural Geology and GIS, and The Oceans in a Changing Climate. The third year advances into specialised study with compulsory modules including Applied Oceanography and Fieldwork, Earth Resources for the Green Transition, Environmental and Engineering Geology, Geophysical Field Methods, Ocean and Earth Science Research Training, and Shelf Seas and Shelf Edge Dynamics, alongside optional topics like Biogeochemical Cycles in the Earth System, Coastal Sediment Dynamics, Earthquake and Volcano Seismology, Ecotoxicology, Human and Social Adaptation to Climate and Weather Hazards, Large Scale Ocean Processes and Climate, Palaeoclimate Change, Seafloor Exploration and Surveying, Sustainable Resource Management, and Volcanic and Mantle Processes. The fourth and final year centres on master's level research and advanced study, featuring compulsory modules such as Advanced Analytical Methods for Earth and Environmental Scientists, Advanced Independent Research Project, Advanced Oceanography Fieldwork, and Contemporary Topics in Ocean and Earth Science, with further optional modules available in Advanced Exploration Geophysics, Carbon Storage in the Sub-Surface Environment, Climate and Climate Change, Coastal Morphodynamics, Environmental Radioactivity and Radiochemistry, Geotechnics for Geoscientists, Seafloor Exploration and Surveying 2, Sustainability and Resilience, The Ground Beneath Our Feet: The Geological History of the last 2 Million Years, and The Sustainability Professional.
