About this course
Bachelor of Arts in Film and English, an English Literature and Film Studies degree examining storytelling traditions across cinema and written texts. Core topics include Programming, Statistics, Research Methods, Ethics & Professional Practice, and Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. Students can engage in extended independent research through a final-year dissertation module in either discipline. The first year introduces foundational concepts through compulsory modules such as European Cinema, Introduction to Film 1: Form, Style and Analysis, Poetic Language, and The Novel, while optional modules cover topics like World Dramas and Theory and Criticism. The second year continues with compulsory study in Early and Silent Cinema, 1895-1929 and The Worlding of English Literature, alongside optional modules exploring animation, digital media, corpus linguistics, and scriptwriting. In the final year, students select from a wide range of specialized optional modules spanning global screen cultures, environmental cinema, horror on film, and video games, with options to undertake either an English Dissertation or a Film Dissertation.
