About this course
Integrated Masters degree in Science in Geology, an Earth and Environmental Sciences degree centred on planetary materials, systems, and geological history. Core topics include Data Analysis, Research Methods, Fieldwork, and Critical & Analytical Thinking. The course is accredited by The Geological Society of London and includes residential field courses, an independent mapping project, and an advanced independent research project in the final year. The first year introduces Earth materials, systems, and geochemical processes through compulsory modules such as Dynamic Earth, Earth Materials, Earth and Ocean System, and Fieldwork for Geoscientists. The second year examines petrology, surface environments, and structures via modules including Exploration Geophysics and Remote Sensing, Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology, Sediment in the Environment, and Structural Geology and GIS. The third year covers resource transition, seismology, and Earth evolution through modules such as Earth Resources for the Green Transition, Earthquake and Volcano Seismology, Independent Mapping Project, and The Evolving Earth. The final year focuses on advanced analytical techniques and contemporary topics through compulsory modules like Advanced Analytical Methods for Earth and Environmental Scientists, Advanced Independent Research Project, and Contemporary Topics in Ocean and Earth Science. Optional modules across later stages allow specialisation in areas such as biogeochemical cycles, climate change, and seafloor exploration.
