About this course

Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages (1 language: French, German or Spanish), a French and Francophone Studies and German and Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies degree centred on linguistic development and cultural analysis. Core topics include Statistics, Research Methods, Human Behaviour, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. Students spend the third year abroad on a workplace, teaching or university placement completing independent academic work. The first year establishes language foundations through modules such as French Language Stage 4, German Language Stage 4, Spanish Language Stage 4, and Academic Skills for Modern languages and Linguistics Students. Year two continues language progression with French Language Stage 5, German Language Stage 5, Spanish Language Stage 5, alongside Preparation for your Third Year (Abroad). The final year supports transition back to Southampton with Seeing and Being Seen. Period Abroad Re-entry. Optional modules span areas such as linguistics, translation, culture, and history, with options including Corpus Linguistics: Working with Large-scale Text Data, Audiovisual Translation, and Public Service Interpreting. Students may also undertake independent research through the Languages, Cultures and Linguistics Dissertation.
