About this course
Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages and Philosophy (1 language: French or German), a modern languages and philosophy degree centred on linguistic, philosophical, historical and cultural study. Core topics include Statistics, Research Methods, Human Behaviour, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, and Global & Comparative Perspective. Students complete a year abroad on a workplace, teaching or university placement during the course. The first year establishes academic foundations through compulsory modules such as Academic Skills for Modern languages and Linguistics students, Ethics, Introduction to French and Francophone Studies, Introduction to German Studies, Reason and Argument, and Truth, Knowledge, and Objectivity, alongside optional modules covering topics such as linguistics and applied ethics. The second year prepares participants for cultural immersion through compulsory preparation and optional study in areas such as corpus linguistics, epistemology, and moral philosophy. The third year involves a period abroad completed through the Residence Abroad Portfolio. The final year supports students upon their return to Southampton with re-entry modules and advanced optional choices including Advanced Aesthetics: Aesthetic Creativity, Philosophical Logic, and Philosophy Dissertation.
