About this course

Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages (2 languages: French, German, Portuguese or Spanish), a modern languages degree centred on the acquisition of advanced linguistic proficiency and cultural knowledge across two chosen languages. Core topics include Statistics, Research Methods, Human Behaviour, and Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. The programme includes a compulsory third year spent abroad completing a residence abroad portfolio through study, work experience, or a teaching assistantship. The first year establishes foundational linguistic competencies and cultural backgrounds through modules such as French Language Stage 4, German Language Stage 4, Introduction to French and Francophone Studies, and Introduction to German Studies. During the second year, students prepare for their period abroad with modules like Preparation for your Third Year (Abroad), alongside cultural studies such as Culture, Power and Resistance in the Portuguese-Speaking World. Optional modules across the degree span specialized interests including Corpus Linguistics: Working with Large-scale Text Data, Audiovisual Translation, and Public Service Interpreting. In the final year, students undertake advanced compulsory study such as Encounters with Bodies in Lusophone Cultural Narrative, and have the option to complete a substantial independent research project through the Languages, Cultures and Linguistics Dissertation.
