About this course

Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages and Linguistics (2 languages: French, German or Spanish), an undergraduate degree centred on English Language and Linguistics and French and Francophone Studies and German and Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies. Core topics include Research Methods, Human Behaviour, and Statistics. The course spans four years and includes a compulsory third year spent abroad on a workplace, teaching or university placement, supported by dedicated preparation and re-entry modules. Students select two languages from French, German or Spanish, with the option to study a language ab initio supported by extra teaching and funding for an intensive course abroad after the first year. The first year establishes foundations through compulsory modules such as Elements of Linguistics: Sound, Structure and Meaning, Language, Ideologies and Attitudes, and Academic Skills for Modern languages and Linguistics Students, alongside language stage modules and optional topics like Language Acquisition. In the second year, students prepare for the period abroad and can choose from various optional modules covering cultural and linguistic themes, including Corpus Linguistics: Working with Large-scale Text Data, Psycholinguistics, and Exploring French Linguistics. The final fourth year features advanced study and options such as Second Language Acquisition, Language and Speech Disorders, and the Languages, Cultures and Linguistics Dissertation.
