About this course

MBiochem (Honours) in Biochemistry, a biochemistry degree focused on the biochemical mechanisms of life processes. Core topics include Research Methods. The course combines undergraduate and postgraduate study into a five-year programme culminating in a final-year laboratory project with a research group. The first year covers the foundations through Biology 1, Biology 2, Introductory Inorganic and Physical Chemistry, and Organic and Biological Chemistry 1. The second year builds on this with Applied Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Organic Chemistry 2. The third year continues with Advanced Biochemistry, Infection and Disease, Gene Regulation, Membranes and Cell Communication, and Protein Structure and Function. The fifth year offers specialised study through Antimicrobials – Mode of Action and Resistance, Metabolic and Clinical Biochemistry, Structure-based Drug Discovery, Molecular Virology, and The CRISPR system for Antiviral Defence and Genome Engineering.
