About this course
MChem (Honours) in Chemistry, a chemistry degree centred on the composition and properties of matter, molecular creation, and materials science. This five-year programme is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry and includes an industrial placement year. The first year covers the foundations through Inorganic and Physical Chemistry 1, Introductory Inorganic and Physical Chemistry and Organic and Biological Chemistry 1. The second year focuses on core theory and laboratory work via Inorganic Chemistry 2, Organic Chemistry 2 and Physical Chemistry 2. The third year builds advanced knowledge through Mechanism in Organic Chemistry, Organometallic Chemistry, Quantum Theory of Atoms, Molecules and Solids and Synthetic Methodology. The fourth year involves industrial placement options with organisations such as AstraZeneca (UK), BASF (Ludwigshafen, Germany) and GlaxoSmithKline (UK). The final year explores specialist topics through Advanced Spectroscopic Methods, Asymmetric Synthesis, Chemical Biology, Homogeneous Catalysis and Nanostructured Materials.
