Entry requirements
A level: ABB (Previous study of a foreign language is preferred (not necessarily one of the named languages) but not required. Applicants may study two languages at beginner level and may seek advice from the departments concerned if needed.) IB: 34 points (A total of 16 points in three higher level subjects, with no higher level score below 5. Foreign language preferred.)
About this course
BA in Bulgarian and French, a French and Francophone Studies and Russian Studies degree centred on linguistic and cultural studies across two academic departments. Core topics include Research Methods. This four-year course includes a compulsory year abroad spent studying or working in relevant countries. The first year introduces foundational language acquisition and cultural contexts through modules such as Use of French 1, The Making of Modern France, Bulgarian Language Level 1, and War, Trauma and Memory in East European Cinema. The second year builds proficiency with Use of French 2, Bulgarian Language Level 2a-Comprehension, Introduction to Bulgarian Culture and Literature, and Writing from the Other Europe, alongside various optional historical and literary modules. The third year consists of an integrated period abroad. The final year incorporates advanced linguistic training and specialized study through French Oral 3, Use of French 3, Bulgarian Language Level 3a - Comprehension, and a Free-standing Dissertation, with optional choices covering topics like Advanced Translation and French Existentialism.
