About this course

BA in Bulgarian and Hebrew, a Russian Studies and Hebrew and Jewish Studies degree focusing on the study of language and culture. Core topics include Research Methods. Students undertake a year abroad to experience the societies and cultures associated with both languages. The first year introduces foundational language acquisition through Modern Hebrew Language 1 and Bulgarian Language Level 1, alongside compulsory studies in Kita Alef: Introduction to Jewish Studies, War, Trauma and Memory in East European Cinema, and Literature and Memory, with optional modules such as Religion, State and Society in Modern European History and Modern Jewish History (Antisemitism, Migration, and Identity). The second year advances linguistic proficiency via Modern Hebrew Language 2, Bulgarian Language Level 2a-Comprehension, and Bulgarian Language Level 2b-Production, supported by Introduction to Bulgarian Culture and Literature and Writing from the Other Europe, while optional choices include Vampires, Society and Culture: Transylvania and Beyond, Languages in Contact along the Danube: Intercultural Frictions and Flows, and Crossroads of Culture: Language and Identity in the Literatures of Ukraine from Crimea to the Shtetl.
