Entry requirements
A level: ABB (Previous study of a foreign language is preferred (not necessarily one of the named languages) but not required. Applicants may study two languages at beginner level and may seek advice from the departments concerned if needed.) IB: 34 points (A total of 16 points in three higher level subjects, with no higher level score below 5. Foreign language preferred.)
About this course
BA in Bulgarian and Italian, an Italian and Russian Studies degree centred on the study of two modern languages and associated regional cultures. Core topics include Research Methods. The course spans four academic years and includes a compulsory year abroad, teaching students across both the School of Slavonic and East European Studies and the School of European Languages, Culture and Society. The first year covers language foundations through First Year Italian Language, Bulgarian Language Level 1, Introduction to Italian Studies 1, and War, Trauma and Memory in East European Cinema, alongside optional choices such as How Words Work: Sounds and Sense. The second year progresses with Second Year Italian Language, Bulgarian Language Level 2a-Comprehension, Bulgarian Language Level 2b-Production, and Introduction to Bulgarian Culture and Literature, with options including Dante and Petrarch and Italian Culture during Fascism. The third year consists of a year abroad spent studying or working in relevant linguistic regions. The final year concludes studies with Final Year Italian Language, Bulgarian Language Level 3a - Comprehension, Bulgarian Language Level 3b - Production, and a Free-standing Dissertation, alongside optional modules such as Futurism in Italy and Translation: Theory and Practice.
