Entry requirements
A level: ABB (Previous study of a foreign language is preferred (not necessarily one of the named languages) but not required. Applicants may study two languages at beginner level and may seek advice from the departments concerned if needed.) IB: 34 points (A total of 16 points in three higher level subjects, with no higher level score below 5. Foreign language preferred.)
About this course
BA in Bulgarian and Norwegian, a German and Russian studies degree centred on the study of two European languages and their respective cultures. Core topics include Research Methods. This four-year undergraduate programme incorporates an integrated year abroad and concludes with a compulsory final-year dissertation. The curriculum is taught across two academic departments, combining language acquisition with historical and literary analysis. The first year covers initial language foundations through Introduction to Norwegian Language and Culture, Introduction to Nordic Studies 1, Introduction to Nordic Studies 2, Bulgarian Language Level 1, War, Trauma and Memory in East European Cinema, and Literature and Memory, with optional modules such as Representations of Russia and Russian and Soviet Cinema: History, Ideology, Society. The second year progresses to Intermediate Norwegian Language and Culture, Bulgarian Language Level 2a-Comprehension, Bulgarian Language Level 2b-Production, Introduction to Bulgarian Culture and Literature, and Writing from the Other Europe, alongside optional choices including Intermediate Danish Language and Culture 2 and Intermediate Swedish Language and Culture. The third year consists of the year abroad. The fourth year focuses on advanced proficiency through Advanced Norwegian Language and Culture, Bulgarian Language Level 3a - Comprehension, Bulgarian Language Level 3b - Production, and the Free-standing Dissertation, with further optional modules available such as Northern Sites and Cities: Perspectives of Urban and Cultural Geographies of the Nordic Region and Translation from the Scandinavian Languages.
