A level: ABB (Previous study of a foreign language is preferred (not necessarily one of the named languages) but not required. Applicants may study two languages at beginner level and may seek advice from the departments concerned if needed.) IB: 34 points (A total of 16 points in three higher level subjects, with no higher level score below 5. Foreign language preferred.)
About this course
BA in Bulgarian and Serbian/Croatian, a Russian Studies degree centred on language acquisition and cultural study of Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. Core topics include Research Methods. Students spend a mandatory third year abroad across two terms. The first year establishes language proficiencies with Bulgarian Language Level 1 and Serbian and Croatian Language Level 1, alongside compulsory modules such as War, Trauma and Memory in East European Cinema and Literature and Memory. The second year advances linguistic skills through Bulgarian Language Level 2a-Comprehension, Bulgarian Language Level 2b-Production, Serbian and Croatian Language Level 2a-Comprehension, and Serbian and Croatian Language Level 2b-Production, supported by Introduction to Bulgarian Culture and Literature and Introduction to Serbian and Croatian Literature. The third year consists of Year Abroad Term 1 and Year Abroad Term 2. The final fourth year achieves advanced fluency via Bulgarian Language Level 3a - Comprehension, Bulgarian Language Level 3b - Production, Serbian and Croatian Language Level 3a - Comprehension, and Serbian and Croatian Language Level 3b - Production, alongside Serbian and Croatian Literature 3 and a Free-standing Dissertation. Optional modules span subjects such as Translation: Theory and Practice, Narratives of Exile, and Contemporary Art and Politics in Eastern Europe and Russia.
