About this course
BA in Bulgarian and Spanish is a joint honours degree in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies and Russian Studies, focusing on two linguistic traditions and associated cultural histories. Core topics include Research Methods and Critical & Analytical Thinking. Students undertake a mandatory year abroad during the third academic year, and complete a final-year dissertation. The first year introduces foundational linguistic skills alongside core subjects such as Bulgarian Language Level 1, War, Trauma and Memory in East European Cinema, and Spanish Language I. The second year builds proficiency through Bulgarian Language Level 2a-Comprehension, Bulgarian Language Level 2b-Production, and Spanish Language II, while exploring cultural topics. The third year consists of a study or work placement abroad. The fourth year focuses on advanced proficiency and independent study, featuring compulsory modules like Bulgarian Language Level 3a - Comprehension, Bulgarian Language Level 3b - Production, Free-standing Dissertation, and Spanish Language III. Optional modules in the final year allow students to study specific areas such as Narratives of Exile, Crime Fictions in Latin America, and Spanish Film from the 1990s: New Ways of Seeing (II).
