About this course

BA in Czech and Yiddish, a Russian Studies and Modern Languages degree focusing on the study of Central and East European languages and literatures. Core topics include Research Methods. Students spend the third year abroad to immerse themselves in the cultures and societies associated with both languages. During the first year, students establish language and literary foundations through modules such as Kita Alef: Introduction to Jewish Studies, Yiddish Language 1, Czech Language Level 1, War, Trauma and Memory in East European Cinema, and Literature and Memory. The second year continues language acquisition and cultural study with Yiddish Language 2, Czech Language Level 2a-Comprehension, Czech Language Level 2b-Production, Introduction to Czech Literature and Culture, and Writing from the Other Europe. The third year offers optional study abroad opportunities including Hebrew and Jewish Studies Study Abroad 1, Hebrew and Jewish Studies Study Abroad 2, Year Abroad Term 1, and Year Abroad Term 2. The fourth and final year consolidates proficiency through Czech Language Level 3a - Comprehension, Czech Language Level 3b - Production, and Czech and Slovak Literature 3, alongside optional research components such as Final Year Dissertation and Free-standing Dissertation.
