Entry requirements
A level: ABB (Previous study of a foreign language is preferred (not necessarily one of the named languages) but not required. Applicants may study two languages at beginner level and may seek advice from the departments concerned if needed.) IB: 34 points (A total of 16 points in three higher level subjects, with no higher level score below 5. Foreign language preferred.)
About this course
BA in Danish and Romanian, a German and Russian Studies degree spanning Scandinavian and East European languages and cultures. Core topics include Research Methods. The course is taught across the School of Slavonic and East European Studies and the School of European Languages, Culture and Society. Throughout the four academic years, students progress from beginner to advanced language proficiencies while exploring regional history and literature. The first year establishes foundations through Introduction to Danish Language and Culture, Introduction to Nordic Studies 1, War, Trauma and Memory in East European Cinema, and Romanian Language Level 1. The second year builds competence via Intermediate Danish Language and Culture, Writing from the Other Europe, Romanian Language Level 2a-Comprehension, and Introduction to Romanian Literature, alongside optional language choices such as Intermediate Swedish Language and Culture. The third year consists of the SELCS Year Abroad. The final year concentrates on advanced study with Advanced Danish Language and Culture, Advanced Project Work in Danish, Norwegian or Swedish, Romanian Language Level 3a - Comprehension, and Romanian Literature 3. Optional modules allow further focus on subjects like Vikings and Valkyries in Contemporary Culture and Translation from the Scandinavian Languages, with the option to complete a Free-standing Dissertation.
