Entry requirements
A level: ABB (Previous study of a foreign language is preferred (not necessarily one of the named languages) but not required. Applicants may study two languages at beginner level and may seek advice from the departments concerned if needed.) IB: 34 points (A total of 16 points in three higher level subjects, with no higher level score below 5. Foreign language preferred.)
About this course
BA in Dutch and Finnish, a German and Modern Languages degree centred on language acquisition and cultural studies across two linguistic traditions. The programme includes a compulsory year abroad. The first year covers foundational language and culture through An Introduction to Dutch Language and Culture, Introduction to Dutch Studies 1, Introduction to Dutch Studies 2, Introduction to Nordic Studies 1, Introduction to Nordic Studies 2, and Finnish Language Level 1. The second year progresses with Intermediate Dutch Language and Culture, Finnish Language Level 2a-Comprehension, Finnish Language Level 2b-Production, and Introduction to Finnish Society and Culture, alongside optional modules such as Modern Dutch Literary Texts and Multiculturalism and Identity. The third year consists of study abroad terms. The final year involves Advanced Dutch Language and Culture, Finnish Language Level 3a - Comprehension, Finnish Language Level 3b - Production, and Advanced Finnish Society and Culture, with optional study choices including Project in Dutch, Low Countries Cinema, and Advanced Translation.
