Entry requirements

A level: ABB (Previous study of a foreign language is preferred (not necessarily one of the named languages) but not required. Applicants may study two languages at beginner level and may seek advice from the departments concerned if needed.) IB: 34 points (A total of 16 points in three higher level subjects, with no higher level score below 5. Foreign language preferred.)

About this course

BA in Dutch and Romanian, a German and Russian Studies degree centred on the study of two European languages and their respective cultural histories. Core topics include Research Methods. This four-year course includes a compulsory year abroad spent studying or working in relevant linguistic regions. The first year covers language acquisition and foundational cultural contexts through An Introduction to Dutch Language and Culture, Introduction to Dutch Studies 1, War, Trauma and Memory in East European Cinema and Romanian Language Level 1. The second year progresses to intermediate proficiency via Intermediate Dutch Language and Culture, Writing from the Other Europe, Romanian Language Level 2a-Comprehension and Introduction to Romanian Literature, alongside optional choices such as Born out of Rebellion: The Netherlands from the Dutch Revolt to the Eve of World War I. The third year is dedicated to the year abroad. The fourth year concludes studies with Advanced Dutch Language and Culture, Romanian Language Level 3a - Comprehension, Romanian Language Level 3b - Production and Romanian Literature 3, with further options including Project in Dutch, Low Countries Cinema and Free-standing Dissertation.
