Entry requirements

A level: ABB (Previous study of a foreign language is preferred (not necessarily one of the named languages) but not required. Applicants may study two languages at beginner level and may seek advice from the departments concerned if needed.) IB: 34 points (A total of 16 points in three higher level subjects, with no higher level score below 5. Foreign language preferred.)

About this course

BA in Finnish and Russian, a Russian Studies and Modern Languages degree focused on language acquisition and regional cultures. Core topics include Research Methods. The course includes a compulsory academic year abroad split across two terms in the third year. The first year covers foundational linguistic and cultural studies through Introduction to Nordic Studies 1, Finnish Language Level 1 and Introduction to Russian Studies I. The second year progresses with Finnish Language Level 2a-Comprehension, Finnish Language Level 2b-Production and Introduction to Finnish Society and Culture alongside options such as Nordic Politics and Society. The fourth year advances proficiency through Finnish Language Level 3a - Comprehension, Finnish Language Level 3b - Production, Advanced Finnish Society and Culture, Comprehension of Russian (Year 4) and Use of Russian (Year 4). Optional modules in later stages allow specialisation in areas such as Nordic Cinema, Translation: Theory and Practice, and Contemporary Art and Politics in Eastern Europe and Russia, with an option to complete an SSEES Research Project (Half).
