Entry requirements

A level: ABB (Previous study of a foreign language is preferred (not necessarily one of the named languages) but not required. Applicants may study two languages at beginner level and may seek advice from the departments concerned if needed.) IB: 34 points (A total of 16 points in three higher level subjects, with no higher level score below 5. Foreign language preferred.)

About this course

BA in French and German, a modern languages degree centred on French and Francophone Studies and German. The course includes a compulsory third-year period abroad spent across two terms. The first year covers language foundations through Use of French 1, The Making of Modern France, Reading French Texts, French Oral 1, Introduction to German Studies 1, and Introduction to German Studies 2, alongside optional choices such as Modern German Language and Culture and German for Beginners 1. The second year continues linguistic training with Use of French 2 and French Oral 2, while offering optional modules spanning literary theory, historical periods from the medieval era onwards, French film history, and contemporary social studies. The third year consists of SELCS Year Abroad Term 1 and SELCS Year Abroad Term 2. The fourth year concludes the programme with advanced language study through French Oral 3, Use of French 3, and Discussion and Essay in German, alongside numerous optional modules addressing topics such as political and social thought, advanced translation, specific literary movements, and historical analyses.
