About this course
BA in French and Hebrew, a French and Francophone Studies and Hebrew and Jewish Studies degree examining the languages, cultures, and histories of both traditions. Students complete a mandatory year abroad immersing them in relevant societies. The programme includes modern and biblical language study alongside historical and literary analysis. The first year covers foundational linguistic and cultural competence through compulsory modules such as Use of French 1, The Making of Modern France, Reading French Texts, French Oral 1, Modern Hebrew Language 1, and Kita Alef: Introduction to Jewish Studies, while optional choices allow study in biblical literature, Jewish history, and religion. The second year continues linguistic progression with Use of French 2, French Oral 2, and Modern Hebrew Language 2, alongside optional options spanning literary periods, contemporary citizenship, and film history. The third year consists of study abroad periods including SELCS Year Abroad Term 2, Hebrew and Jewish Studies Study Abroad 1, and Hebrew and Jewish Studies Study Abroad 2. The fourth year concludes the degree with advanced compulsory language instruction in French Oral 3, Use of French 3, and Modern Hebrew Language 4, complemented by optional modules covering specific historical topics, French existentialism, and gender studies.
