A level: ABB (Previous study of a foreign language is preferred (not necessarily one of the named languages) but not required. Applicants may study two languages at beginner level and may seek advice from the departments concerned if needed.) IB: 34 points (A total of 16 points in three higher level subjects, with no higher level score below 5. Foreign language preferred.)

About this course

BA in French and Hungarian, a modern languages degree centred on French and Francophone Studies and Modern Languages. This four-year course includes a year abroad. Taught across the School of Slavonic and East European Studies and the School of European Languages, Culture and Society, the curriculum combines language acquisition with regional history, culture, and geopolitics. The first year covers language proficiency alongside modules such as Use of French 1, The Making of Modern France, Reading French Texts, French Oral 1, War, Trauma and Memory in East European Cinema, Literature and Memory, and Hungarian Language Level 1. The second year builds competence through Use of French 2, French Oral 2, Writing from the Other Europe, Hungarian Language Level 2a-Comprehension, Hungarian Language Level 2b-Production, and Introduction to Hungarian Literature and Culture, while offering optional modules covering literary theory, historical periods, citizenship, and film history. The third year consists of a year abroad. The fourth year consolidates fluency through advanced study with compulsory modules including French Oral 3, Use of French 3, Hungarian Language Level 3b - Production, Hungarian Literature 3, and Hungarian Language Level 3a - Comprehension, alongside a selection of optional modules in areas such as advanced translation, graphic novels, twentieth-century writing, legendary histories, gender, race and sexuality, and existentialism.
