Entry requirements
A level: ABB (Previous study of a foreign language is preferred (not necessarily one of the named languages) but not required. Applicants may study two languages at beginner level and may seek advice from the departments concerned if needed.) IB: 34 points (A total of 16 points in three higher level subjects, with no higher level score below 5. Foreign language preferred.)
About this course
BA in French and Italian, a French and Francophone Studies and Italian degree centred on language acquisition and cultural study across two major European traditions. The course includes a compulsory year abroad spent studying or working in relevant linguistic regions during the third year. The first year covers language foundations and cultural contexts through Use of French 1, The Making of Modern France, Reading French Texts, French Oral 1, First Year Italian Language, Introduction to Italian Studies 1, and Introduction to Italian Studies 2. The second year continues linguistic training via Use of French 2, French Oral 2, and Second Year Italian Language, alongside optional modules covering literary periods, historical eras, and cinema such as An Introduction to Literary Theory, The Renaissance Period, and French Film History. The third year consists of SELCS Year Abroad Term 1 and SELCS Year Abroad Term 2. The final year consolidates advanced proficiency through French Oral 3, Use of French 3, and Final Year Italian Language, with further study options including Advanced Translation, Comics in French, and French Existentialism: Sartre, Coffee, and Cigarettes.
