Entry requirements
A level: AAA (Previous study of a foreign language is preferred (not necessarily one of the named languages) but not required. Applicants may study two languages at beginner level and may seek advice from the departments concerned if needed.) IB: 38 points (A total of 18 points in three higher level subjects, with no higher level score below 5. Foreign language preferred.)
About this course
BA in French and Philosophy, a French and Francophone Studies and Philosophy degree focused on language acquisition alongside historical and contemporary philosophical inquiry. Students spend the third year abroad studying or working in a French-speaking environment. The first year covers core language acquisition and cultural foundations through Use of French 1, The Making of Modern France, Reading French Texts, and French Oral 1, with options in philosophy. The second year continues language development through Use of French 2 and French Oral 2 alongside optional modules covering historical periods of French literature and philosophical texts. The third year consists of SELCS Year Abroad Term 1 and SELCS Year Abroad Term 2. The fourth year concludes the degree with advanced language proficiency through French Oral 3 and Use of French 3, complemented by optional studies in specialized French history, literature, and political thought.
