Entry requirements
A level: ABB (Previous study of a foreign language is preferred (not necessarily one of the named languages) but not required. Applicants may study two languages at beginner level and may seek advice from the departments concerned if needed.) IB: 34 points (A total of 16 points in three higher level subjects, with no higher level score below 5. Foreign language preferred.)
About this course
BA in French and Portuguese, a French and Francophone Studies and Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies degree focusing on linguistic proficiency and cultural study. Students spend the third year undertaking a period abroad studying or working in relevant linguistic regions. The first year establishes language proficiencies through modules such as Use of French 1, The Making of Modern France, Introduction to Portuguese Language and Lusophone Culture and The Brazilian Novel. The second year continues language acquisition alongside option choices covering literary history and contemporary culture, including Use of French 2, French Oral 2, Intermediate Portuguese Language and Lusophone Culture and The Golden Age of Portuguese Travel Literature. The third year consists of a compulsory academic year abroad split across two terms. The final year involves advanced study with compulsory modules like French Oral 3, Use of French 3, Advanced Portuguese Language and Lusophone Culture and Portugal and Its Empire in the 20th Century: Trajectories and Memories, complemented by optional specialized topics.
