About this course
BA in German and Film Studies, a School of European Languages, Culture and Society degree centred on linguistic competence and visual culture. Core topics include Research Methods. This four-year course includes a compulsory year abroad spent immersed in German-speaking culture and society. The first year establishes foundational knowledge through Manufacturing Consent: Media and the Making of the Modern World, Theories and Methods in Film and Media Studies, Film and Media History and Analysis, Introduction to German Studies 1, and Introduction to German Studies 2. The second year expands into genre analysis and contemporary cinema with Introduction to Film Genre, Topics in Popular Film and Media, Mediatising Dissent, and Directions in Contemporary Cinema, alongside optional literary or cinematic topics. The third year consists of SELCS Year Abroad Term 1 and SELCS Year Abroad Term 2. The final fourth year involves advanced language work and independent research through Dissertation in Film and Media and Discussion and Essay in German, alongside specialized options such as Low Countries Cinema or Weimar and Nazi Film.
