Entry requirements

A level: ABB (Previous study of a foreign language is preferred (not necessarily one of the named languages) but not required. Applicants may study two languages at beginner level and may seek advice from the departments concerned if needed.) IB: 34 points (A total of 16 points in three higher level subjects, with no higher level score below 5. Foreign language preferred.)

About this course

BA in German and Hungarian, a German and Modern Languages degree centred on linguistic proficiency and cultural studies across two distinct European traditions. Core topics include Research Methods. The curriculum includes a compulsory third year spent abroad for language immersion. The first year establishes language foundations through Introduction to German Studies 1, Introduction to German Studies 2, War, Trauma and Memory in East European Cinema, and Hungarian Language Level 1. The second year advances linguistic and literary competence via Writing from the Other Europe, Hungarian Language Level 2a-Comprehension, Hungarian Language Level 2b-Production, and Introduction to Hungarian Literature and Culture. The third year consists of an integrated period abroad. The final year consolidates mastery through Discussion and Essay in German, Hungarian Language Level 3b - Production, Hungarian Literature 3, and Hungarian Language Level 3a - Comprehension. Optional modules across various stages allow study in areas such as German Translation, Aspects of Twentieth Century German History, Modern German Language and Culture, and the Free-standing Dissertation.
