Entry requirements

A level: ABB (Previous study of a foreign language is preferred (not necessarily one of the named languages) but not required. Applicants may study two languages at beginner level and may seek advice from the departments concerned if needed.) IB: 34 points (A total of 16 points in three higher level subjects, with no higher level score below 5. Foreign language preferred.)

About this course

BA in German and Serbian/Croatian, a German and Russian Studies degree spanning literature, history and language. Core topics include Research Methods. The course is taught across two departments, namely the School of Slavonic and East European Studies and the School of European Languages, Culture and Society, and includes an integrated year abroad. The first year establishes language and cultural foundations through Introduction to German Studies 1, War, Trauma and Memory in East European Cinema, and Serbian and Croatian Language Level 1. The second year progresses with Writing from the Other Europe, Serbian and Croatian Language Level 2a-Comprehension, and Introduction to Serbian and Croatian Literature. Year three consists of a period spent abroad. The fourth and final year involves advanced study through Discussion and Essay in German, Serbian and Croatian Language Level 3a - Comprehension, and Serbian and Croatian Literature 3. Optional modules across the degree allow specialisation in areas such as German Translation, Aspects of Twentieth Century German History, and Weimar and Nazi Film, with students also able to complete a Free-standing Dissertation.
