Entry requirements

A level: ABB (Previous study of a foreign language is preferred (not necessarily one of the named languages) but not required. Applicants may study two languages at beginner level and may seek advice from the departments concerned if needed.) IB: 34 points (A total of 16 points in three higher level subjects, with no higher level score below 5. Foreign language preferred.)

About this course

BA in German and Ukrainian, a German and Russian Studies degree centred on the language, history, culture, and geopolitics of both linguistic regions. The programme is taught across the School of Slavonic and East European Studies and the School of European Languages, Culture and Society, and incorporates a compulsory year abroad. The first year establishes core linguistic foundations and cultural contexts through modules such as Introduction to German Studies 1, War, Trauma and Memory in East European Cinema, and Ukrainian Language Level 1. The second year continues language development with Ukrainian Language Level 2a-Comprehension and Ukrainian Culture and Text A, alongside various optional choices. The third year consists of a study or work placement abroad across terms 1 and 2. The fourth year advances proficiency further through compulsory study in Discussion and Essay in German, The Making of Modern Ukraine I, and Ukrainian Language Level 3a - Comprehension, complemented by options spanning advanced translation, historical studies, and regional literature.
