About this course
BA in German, a German degree focused on language proficiency and the study of cultural history and society. The course includes a compulsory third year spent studying abroad. The first year introduces foundational subjects through Understanding History: Facts, Interpretations, Stories, Introduction to the Study of Language and Linguistics, Theories and Methods in Film and Media Studies, Mediatising Dissent, Introduction to German Studies 1, and Introduction to German Studies 2. Second-year students select from optional modules such as The Power of Maps, Nationalism and Ethnicity in Contemporary Europe, Utopias and Dystopias in Literature, Theatre Translations and Adaptations, Introduction to Film Genre, Topics in Popular Film and Media, Aspects of European Thought, Cultures of Conflict, Topics in Linguistics I, and Topics in Linguistics II. The third year consists of SELCS Year Abroad Term 1 and SELCS Year Abroad Term 2. The fourth year focuses on advanced linguistic competence with compulsory modules Advanced German Translation and Discussion and Essay in German. Optional modules in the final year allow specialisation in areas like German Political and Social Thought, History and Representation: The Holocaust as a Case Study, Austrian Literature 1890 - 1938: from Empire to Republic, Language, Power and Ideology, Surveillance, Weimar and Nazi Film, War and Violence in Twentieth Century Germany, and The Writing of WG Sebald.
