Entry requirements
A level: ABB (Previous study of a foreign language is preferred (not necessarily one of the named languages) but not required. Applicants may study two languages at beginner level and may seek advice from the departments concerned if needed.) IB: 34 points (A total of 16 points in three higher level subjects, with no higher level score below 5. Foreign language preferred.)
About this course
BA in Hebrew and Hungarian, a Hebrew and Jewish Studies and Modern Languages degree centred on linguistic and cultural study across two traditions. Core topics include Research Methods. The course includes a compulsory year spent abroad to immerse students in the target cultures and societies. The first year introduces foundational language acquisition through Modern Hebrew Language 1 and Hungarian Language Level 1 alongside compulsory modules such as Kita Alef: Introduction to Jewish Studies, War, Trauma and Memory in East European Cinema, and Literature and Memory, with additional options like Religion, State and Society in Modern European History. The second year continues linguistic progression with Modern Hebrew Language 2, Hungarian Language Level 2a-Comprehension, and Hungarian Language Level 2b-Production, supported by Writing from the Other Europe and Introduction to Hungarian Literature and Culture. The third year consists of study abroad placements such as Hebrew and Jewish Studies Study Abroad 1, Hebrew and Jewish Studies Study Abroad 2, Year Abroad Term 1, and Year Abroad Term 2. The fourth year advances proficiency through Modern Hebrew Language 4, Hungarian Language Level 3a - Comprehension, Hungarian Language Level 3b - Production, and Hungarian Literature 3, with optional modules including European Jewry and the Holocaust, History of the Jews in Poland, Metropolitan Life: Jews and the City, Yiddish Language 2, Final Year Dissertation, and Free-standing Dissertation.
