Entry requirements

A level: ABB (Previous study of a foreign language is preferred (not necessarily one of the named languages) but not required. Applicants may study two languages at beginner level and may seek advice from the departments concerned if needed.) IB: 34 points (A total of 16 points in three higher level subjects, with no higher level score below 5. Foreign language preferred.)

About this course

BA in Hungarian and Polish, a Russian Studies and Modern Languages degree focusing on the acquisition of two Central and Eastern European languages alongside regional culture and literature. Core topics include Research Methods. The four-year programme includes a compulsory year abroad split across two terms, allowing students to study or work in the target language regions. The first year establishes language competencies through Hungarian Language Level 1 and Polish Language Level 1, alongside foundational modules such as War, Trauma and Memory in East European Cinema and Literature and Memory. The second year advances proficiency through Hungarian Language Level 2a-Comprehension, Hungarian Language Level 2b-Production, Polish Language Level 2a-Comprehension, and Polish Language Level 2b-Production, supplemented by Introduction to Hungarian Literature and Culture and Introduction to Polish Literature. The third year consists of Year Abroad Term 1 and Year Abroad Term 2. The fourth and final year consolidates mastery through Hungarian Language Level 3a - Comprehension, Hungarian Language Level 3b - Production, Polish Language Level 3a - Comprehension, and Polish Language Level 3b - Production, alongside Hungarian Literature 3 and Polish Literature 3. Students may also choose to undertake a Free-standing Dissertation.
